Lukas Weißhaidinger startete gut ins Diamond-League-Finale und das, obwohl es ausgerechnet bei ihm stark zu regnen begann: Der 27-Jährige verbuchte bereits im zweiten Durchgang die mehr als respektable Weite von 65,66 m und lag bis zum letzten Durchgang auf dem zweiten Rang, durfte von einem satten Preisgeld träumen. Einzig der Schwede Daniel Stahl, Vize-Weltmeister, Jahres-Weltbester und Saison-Dominator, war mit zwei Würfen über 68 Meter außer Reichweite. Vorjahrssieger Fedrick Dacres (Jam), Welt- und Europameister Andrius Gudzius (LTU), Ex-Weltmeister Piotr Malachowski (POL) und Olympiasieger Christoph Harting (GER) kamen allesamt nicht an den ÖLV-Rekordhalter heran. Der EM-Dritte von Berlin war dann im finalen sechsten Wurf der einzige, der sich noch verbessern konnte. 66,03 m.
„So eine Weite auf einem nassen Boden und Rang 2 hinter Favorit Stahl, damit war eigentlich nicht zu rechnen. Ich bin super happy“, strahlte der ÖLV-Rekordhalter. Coach Gregor Högler jubelte: „Es war sehr eng im Kampf um Rang zwei, aber Luki hat bis zum Schluss die Nerven behalten. Seine Weite ist unter diesen Bedingungen wirklich beachtlich. Luki hat gezeigt, dass mit ihm in Doha zu rechnen ist. Das ist schon der 4. Stockerl-Platz in der Diamond-League in diesem Jahr. Die WM kann kommen!“
